Dengue Fever (DF) and Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) are the most important vector-borne viral diseases in the World. Around 50-100 million cases appear each year putting 2.5 billion people at risk of suffering this debilitating and sometimes fatal disease. Dengue Fever is prevalent in the Tropics. For that reason, an interdisciplinary team of researchers from the University of Miami (UM) and the University of Costa Rica have used global climatological data and vegetation indices from Costa Rica, to predict Dengue outbreaks in the region.

King Provides Additional Information On The REMOXY® NDA Resubmission Plan
King Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NYSE: KG) announced additional information regarding the resubmission plan for the REMOXY® New Drug Application (NDA). The Company is not required by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct clinical trials in order to provide additional safety or efficacy data in patients with moderate to severe chronic pain. However, as part of the resubmission plan, and in order to strengthen the NDA, King plans to conduct a likeability study and a pharmacokinetic trial in volunteers. The Company continues to anticipate the resubmission could occur mid-year 2010.

What Are Bed Bugs? How To Kill Bed Bugs
Bed bugs, known scientifically as Cimex lectularius (Cimicidae) are small wingless insects that feed by hematophagy - exclusively on the blood of warm blooded-animals. As we are warm-blooded animals we are ideal hosts for them. Over millions of years bed bugs have evolved as nest parasites - inhabiting the nests of birds and the roosts of bats. Some of them have learnt to adapt to the human environment and live in our nests, i.e. our homes, and more specifically, our beds. Newborns, called hatchlings or nymphs, are tiny, about the size of a poppy seed, while adults grow to about Βά of an inch long. Their shape is oval and flattened. Both nymphs, eggs and adults are visible to the naked eye.

Management Agreement With The International Society Of Therapeutic Ultrasound Announced By AIUM

The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) has reached a management agreement with the International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound (ISTU) effective July 1, 2009. The AIUM will support the ISTU"s administrative, financial, and member service functions in an effort to maximize the ISTU"s mission of advancing therapeutic ultrasound applications worldwide. "The AIUM recognizes therapeutic ultrasound as a rapidly expanding area of medical ultrasound," says AIUM President Harvey Nisenbaum, MD. "With a diverse membership in the medical ultrasound community, the AIUM is positioned to promote education and research in therapeutic ultrasound by cultivating the exchange of information among basic scientists, sonographers, and physicians." In April 2009, the AIUM established the Therapeutic Ultrasound Community of Practice, a membership subgroup dedicated to promoting therapeutic ultrasound by assisting in the development of educational programs and providing an opportunity for networking and collaboration. "I think that collaboration between the ISTU and the AIUM can greatly expand awareness of therapeutic ultrasound applications and facilitate growth of our organization," says ISTU President Kullervo Hynynen, PhD. The AIUM has managed several nonprofit medical associations and currently has a management arrangement with the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology. The potential benefits of therapeutic ultrasound are recognized for targeted drug delivery, pathogenic tissue destruction, physical therapy, and several other applications.
