Patients With Moderate To Severe Periodontitis Need Evaluation For Heart Disease Risk
Additional research is called for and patients with moderate to severe periodontitis should receive evaluation and possible treatment to reduce their risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD), according to a special consensus paper by editors of The American Journal of Cardiology and Journal of Peridontology in the July 1, 2009 issue of The American Journal of Cardiology, published by Elsevier.

Needle Exchange Programs Could Save Texas 'Millions Of Dollars,' Opinion Piece Says
Needle exchange programs (NEPs) "are an inexpensive public health intervention, especially when compared with the social costs of treating individuals with HIV or hepatitis-related chronic liver disease," Maureen Trotter, a pathologist and president of the Taylor-Jones-Haskell County Medical Society, writes in the Abilene Reporter News. She adds that legislation introduced this year in the Texas Legislature "to allow public health departments and organizations to establish disease control programs that provide for the anonymous exchange of used hypodermic needles and syringes for sterile ones, offer education and substance abuse treatment and blood-borne disease testing" failed to come to a floor vote. Trotter further discusses NEPs, citing data on outcomes of NEPs, and writes, "The costs of preventing one case of HIV is estimated between $4,000 and $12,000 via NEPs. The medical cost of treating a person infected with HIV is about $200,000," adding, "These programs, if implemented, could save Texas millions of dollars" (7/12).

Three Organizations Form Alliance To Address Global Malnutrition
"Three internationally known organizations based in St. Louis - the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, the Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis Children"s Hospital" - have entered into a partnership, known as the Global Harvest Alliance (GHA), which aims to "create inexpensive, nutritionally complete food to help the world"s hungry and undernourished," the AP/Google.com reports. Alliance researchers will focus on several of the most successful approaches used to combat malnutrition and attempt to further enrich foods already used to fight it. "In addition, the alliance aims to help testing and distribution of crops genetically modified to boost nutritional content. They hope to provide the crops cheaply to farmers to produce more nutritious foods," writes the AP/Google.com (Taylor, 7/29).

Ductal Adenocarcinoma Of The Prostate: Clinical Features And Implications After Local Therapy

UroToday.com - On occasion, urologists will encounter subtypes of prostate cancer (CaP) other than adenocarcinoma. One such subtype is ductal (or endometrioid) CaP. Ductal CaP is characterized by the presence of tall, pseudostratified columnar cells with abundant cytoplasm arranged in a papillary pattern. It can be diagnosed with high Gleason score and advanced stage, but its clinical course has been relatively undefined. In the online version of Cancer, Dr. Shi-Ming Tu and colleagues report a series of 108 patients with ductal CaP. Clinical and pathological variables were retrospectively assessed in these 76 patients who had undergone radical prostatectomy (RP) or the other 32 non-surgical patients who had primarily received radiotherapy. Seventy-five surgical patients were evaluable with a median follow-up of 4.9 years. Interestingly 79% of the men who received a diagnosis of ductal CaP were found to have this subtype in the RP specimen, as opposed to detection on the initial prostate biopsy. Ten men had pure ductal subtype, 15 men had predominately ductal subtype and the other 50 patients had mixed ductal and acinar CaP. PSA, age, stage and Gleason score did not differ between the pure and mixed pathology groups. The median overall survival was 13.8 years for the pure histological group and 8.9 years for the mixed group. The median time to local progression was 2.8 years vs. 4.9 years and the median time to distant metastasis was 3.9 years vs. 2.0 years for patients who had pure ductal CaP vs. mixed ductal CaP of the prostate after RP, respectively. The majority of the non-surgical group was diagnosed by TURP and the median delivered radiotherapy dose was 70 Gy. Median overall survival for the non-surgical group was 8.2 years. The authors conclude that the increased local progression rate in the pure ductal CaP group supports a role for RP as the best option for local control.
