Prevalence Of Artemisinin Monotherapies Raising Risk Of Resistence
Almost half of all artemisinin manufacturers and malaria-endemic countries are "failing to comply" with WHO requirements to sell the treatment in combination with other drugs, which is increasing the risk that malaria parasites will develop resistance to artemsinin, Nature reports. "Of the 69 manufacturers of artemisinin monotherapies that the WHO has identified, 21 have withdrawn monotherapies, and 14 say they intend to comply with the WHO"s recommendations. But the remaining 34 have not yet disclosed their intentions," Nature writes.

Washington, D.C., Church Addresses HIV Stigma, Teaches Safe Sex To Black, Gay Congregation
The Washington Post on Sunday featured Washington D.C.,-based Inner Light Ministries, a 16-year-old black community church with about 100 members, where many go "to share their experience of being black and gay, living and loving in a city where HIV and AIDS lurk in epidemic proportions. ò€¦" Some members of the congregation, as well as four of its leaders including Bishop Rainey Cheeks are HIV-positive. Cheeks teaches safe sex as a part of his sermons and the church provides condoms to its members. The article also discusses the stigma associated with HIV among gay black men. "Some men are reluctant to reveal their health status to possible partners for fear of being rejected," according to the Post. "That attitude, Cheeks said, is part of why gay black men in the District are disproportionately affected by HIV and AIDS. And why he has to keep preaching the message of safe sex," the article states (Fears, 7/26).

Beloit Memorial Hospital Selects GE Healthcare's Optima XR640 Digital Radiographic System For Emergency Department Expansion

GE Healthcare, a division of General Electric Company (NYSE:GE) announced that Beloit Memorial Hospital, Beloit, Wis., has selected an Optima® XR640 digital radiographic system for its expanded emergency department. Digital systems capture X-ray images on computers instead of film. The exams are faster and provide high-quality images, with radiation dose efficiency. The system will help physicians clearly see injuries and abnormalities and confidently prescribe appropriate treatment. Beloit Memorial Hospital is a 105-bed primary care facility affiliated with the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. Serving more than 35,000 emergency patients yearly, the hospital said that the physical size of the emergency department as well as the roster of services was expanded in order to provide better patient care. "We currently see over 100 patients a day, and this new system and emergency department expansion are critical in allowing us to meet the increased capacity demands while maintaining patient comfort," said Mardell Jacobsen, Director of Medical Imaging at Beloit Memorial Hospital. The Optima XR640 was developed to deliver digital productivity and application flexibility. The system includes new tools that help doctors save time while maintaining outstanding image quality. One such tool is Auto Positioning, which allows the technologist to set up exams quickly by pre programming up to 40 exam positions. "With Auto Positioning, the technologist can simply push a button to choose a position for a specific exam," says Jacobsen. "This allows our staff to focus on the patient - who is our number one priority." "The Optima XR640 offers digital image quality and digital productivity," said David Widmann, GE"s General Manager for Global Radiography and Fluoroscopy. "Its moveable detector allows fast and easy positioning, key to maintaining patient comfort and safety in trauma situations."
